Red Fountain Grass (Pennisetum Alopecuroides)
Red Fountain Grass, scientifically known as Pennisetum alopecuroides and commonly called Chinese Fountain Grass, is an elegant ornamental grass native to Asia. It is a clump-forming perennial that typically grows to a height of 40–60 cm and spreads up to 60 cm wide. The plant features narrow, soft green leaves that can reach up to 60 cm in length, arching gracefully to create a flowing, fountain-like form.
In late summer, long, slender flower spikes emerge from the center of the plant. These spikes measure about 15–20 cm in length and are covered in soft, fluffy, cream-colored blooms that add texture, movement, and seasonal interest to the garden. The flowers persist well into fall, enhancing landscapes with their airy appearance. Easy to grow and low in maintenance, Red Fountain Grass thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and performs well in heat and humidity.
