European Fan Palm (Chamaerops Humilis)
The European Fan Palm, scientifically known as Chamaerops humilis, is a small to medium-sized palm native to the Mediterranean region of Europe. It is a slow-growing species that typically reaches 1.5–2 m in height, with a spread of 1.5–2.5 m. The palm has a single trunk covered in brown fibers and is topped with a dense crown of fan-shaped leaves that range from green to bluish-green in color.
The stiff, leathery leaves are deeply divided into fan-like segments and can grow up to 60 cm in length, giving the plant a bold, architectural appearance. During the flowering season, the palm produces small yellow flowers arranged in clusters on branched inflorescences. These are followed by small, round fruits that turn black or brown when mature and contain a single seed.
The European Fan Palm is hardy and adaptable, tolerating a wide range of soil types and temperatures. It is drought-tolerant and thrives in full sun to partial shade, making it well suited for Mediterranean-style gardens, containers, and low-maintenance landscapes.
