Elephant’s Bush, scientifically known as Portulacaria afra, is a hardy succulent plant native to South Africa. It is commonly used as a ground cover but can also grow as a spreading shrub, with stems that may reach lengths of up to 6 m if left unpruned. The plant features small, round, fleshy green leaves arranged in opposite pairs along the stems. When exposed to bright sunlight, the leaves may develop attractive reddish tones, adding to its visual appeal.

Well adapted to arid environments, Elephant’s Bush is highly drought- and heat-tolerant, making it an excellent choice for hot, dry climates and low-water landscapes. Its compact leaves and woody stems also make it a favorite among bonsai enthusiasts. Easy to maintain, this plant requires minimal watering and fertilization. In addition to its ornamental value, Elephant’s Bush is traditionally used for medicinal purposes, as its leaves are rich in antioxidants.
