Elephant’s Bush (Portulacaria afra)
Elephant’s Bush, also known as Portulacaria afra or Dwarf Jade Plant, is a resilient and attractive succulent native to South Africa. It is widely appreciated for its small, round, fleshy green leaves and reddish-brown stems, which can take on a reddish tint when exposed to bright sunlight. The leaves grow in opposite pairs along trailing or upright stems, giving the plant a neat, compact appearance. In the ground, it can grow into a large shrub, while in pots it stays much smaller and manageable.
This succulent is highly valued as a ground cover, ornamental plant, and bonsai specimen due to its adaptability and slow, controlled growth. Elephant’s Bush is extremely drought-tolerant and well-suited for warm, dry climates, making it an excellent low-maintenance option for beginners.
Beyond its ornamental appeal, Elephant’s Bush is also known for its traditional medicinal uses, and its leaves are rich in antioxidants.
