Chickoo Tree (Manilkara zapota)
The Chickoo Tree, scientifically known as Manilkara zapota, is a tropical evergreen tree native to Central America and Mexico and widely cultivated in warm regions for its sweet fruit. While mature trees can grow up to 20 m tall, smaller cultivated varieties typically reach an average height of about 1–2 m. The tree has a dense, rounded crown with glossy, dark green oval-shaped leaves that have a thick, leathery texture, giving it a lush and attractive appearance.
It produces small, fragrant greenish-white flowers that develop into round or oval fruits about 10 cm in diameter. The fruit has a rough brown skin that is easy to peel, revealing a sweet, creamy, and juicy pulp inside. The pulp contains several shiny black seeds, which are usually removed before eating. Chickoo fruit is highly valued for its rich flavor and nutritional benefits, including vitamins A and C along with essential minerals like potassium and calcium. Its evergreen foliage and productive nature make it a popular choice for tropical home gardens and orchards.
