Firecracker Plant (Russelia Equisetiformis)
The Firecracker Plant, scientifically known as Russelia equisetiformis, is a vibrant, eye-catching perennial shrub native to Mexico and Central America. It typically grows to a height of about 50–70 cm and is characterized by its slender, arching, wiry stems that give the plant a graceful, cascading appearance. The foliage is made up of small, narrow green leaves that are often subtle compared to its striking flowers.
The plant is best known for its abundance of long, tubular flowers in brilliant shades of red or orange, which resemble tiny firecrackers hanging from the stems. These blooms appear almost year-round in warm climates and are highly attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds, adding movement and life to the garden. Because of its flowing form, the Firecracker Plant is especially popular in hanging baskets, containers, raised beds, and as a border or accent plant in landscapes.
Firecracker Plant is hardy, adaptable, and low-maintenance. It tolerates a wide range of soil types, performs well in both full sun and partial shade, and is drought-tolerant once established, making it well-suited for warm and dry regions. In addition to its ornamental value, it has also been traditionally used for certain medicinal purposes.
